Colombia & the Climate Change

Climate change is a priority for Colombian government: Colombia is part of the United Nations Framework Agreement for Climate Change - UNFCCC, it ratified the Paris Agreement and adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Colombia is committed to promote national & international sustainable development.

In order to contribute to the solution of climate change, to the extent of its national capacities, Colombia created the following public policy tools:

  • Decree - Law 4819 of 2010 - The Adaptation Fund 
  • Law 1450 of 2011 - National Development Plan - PND 2010 - 2014
  • Law 1753 of 2015 - National Development Plan - PND 2014 - 2018
  • Law 1955 of 2019 - National Development Plan - PND 2018 - 2022
  • National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change
  • Low-Carbon Development Strategy
  • Strategy to Control Deforestation and Forest Management
  • Biodiversity Action Plan - Orinoco Basin
  • National Climate Change Policy

Colombia adopted the 17 SDGs, it is committed to eliminate extreme poverty and hunger, tackle climate change and create a more prosperous world for everyone; recognizing that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Our Mataven REDD+ Project is officially recognized by the
Colombian Government

We promote national & international sustainable development: we stop deforestation, we protect 1.150.212 hectares of tropical forests in the Indigenous Reservation of the Mataven Forest (RIU-SM for its acronym in Spanish) in Colombia - we avoid an average of 3.622.352 Tons of CO2 per year to be released into the atmosphere - while safeguarding its biodiversity and improving the well-being of 15.932 indigenous people.
