The Constitution of Colombia defines indigenous territories as areas of land reserved for use and managed by its indigenous people. Within this area their people have autonomy in managing their political, economic, social and cultural interests, as per their traditions and belief systems.

In 2002, Colombian government legally recognized the RIU-SM as an Indigenous Territory; thereafter, its indigenous leaders created ACATISEMA - Association of Cabildos and Traditional Indigenous Authorities of the Mataven Forest – a body that provides leadership and run the reservation to ensure their cultural survival and protect their natural resources.

The RIU-SM is composed of lands and communities from 16 former indigenous reserves. It is home to 15.943 indigenous people, from 6 different ethnic groups: Sikuani, Piaroa, Puinave, Curripaco, Cubeo and Piapoco.

Our project meets the requirements established under the Cancun Safeguards and adopted by the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). We follow the practices of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) consigned in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
